WE HAVE OVER 75 TEACHERS ACROSS AUCKLAND AND NORTLAND THAT PROVIDES PIANO, GUITAR, KEYBOARD, DRUMS, VIOLIN AND SINGING LESSONS.

New Zealand Modern School of Music has been helping students learn and enjoy music for more than 80 years. As New Zealand’s only national music school, we operate across a wide range of regions throughout the country.

We currently manage around 75 teachers. If you are looking for music lessons for yourself or your child, we can provide information about our school and the teachers available in your area. Once you are happy to proceed, we pass your details on to the appropriate teacher, who will contact you directly to arrange a suitable lesson time.

Our lessons generally run alongside the school year, with four terms of approximately 10 weeks each.

Our teachers use the New Zealand Modern School of Music’s own range of tuition books, developed to support students as they progress. We also offer our own Theory and Practical Examinations. These are optional, but they can provide students with valuable goals to work towards while giving both students and parents a clear indication of progress.

We also hold annual music competitions, giving students the opportunity to perform in front of an audience in a supportive environment. These events help build confidence, recognise achievement and provide further encouragement as students develop their musical skills.

OUR CURRICULUM WAS CREATED BY SOME OF NEW ZEALAND’S LEADING MUSICIANS, TO SUPPORT AND INSPIRE LEARNERS AT EVERY STAGE OF THEIR MUSICAL JOURNEY.

The NZ Modern School of Music curriculum is developed by our Practical Exam Advisory Board, which includes experienced managers and examiners from around New Zealand. The Board meets regularly to review and update the exam material, tuition books and learning resources that form part of our curriculum.

Our curriculum has been developed specifically for NZ Modern School of Music students and has been successfully used for many years. Courses are tailored to suit each student’s instrument, level and ability, and our tuition books are available exclusively through NZ Modern School of Music teachers and pupils.

For piano students, the early stages focus on developing a strong understanding of notation, rhythm and timing. Students progress through our introductory piano books before moving on to our Modern Piano Course, where they begin exploring a wider range of melodies, harmonies and playing styles.

As students advance, they are encouraged to develop their own musical style by experimenting with embellishments, fills, introductions, endings and runs. They also begin creating their own melody outlines and exploring harmony and bass lines, helping to build confidence in arranging and composing music.

This progression allows students not only to learn how to play music, but also to understand how it is constructed and to develop greater creativity and independence as musicians.

WHAT IS MODERN STYLE PIANO?

Modern-style piano combines a melody played with the right hand with harmony and rhythmic accompaniment. Chord symbols shown above the melody guide the student in adding the notes needed to create a fuller, richer sound.

The left hand provides much of the rhythmic foundation. Students learn a range of broken-chord and bass patterns that support the melody while also strengthening their understanding of harmony. As they progress, these patterns can be developed further using intervals, sevenths and octave-based figures.

Students are introduced to a wide variety of accompaniment styles, including Boogie Bass, Latin/Pop Bass, Walking Bass and Arpeggio Bass. Our piano teachers work with around 40 different bass styles, giving students plenty of choice in how they interpret and arrange a piece.

This flexibility is a key part of the NZ Modern School of Music approach, encouraging students to develop their own style rather than simply reproducing a piece in one fixed way.
